Description
CARTIER MYSTERIOUS PRISM 1960s/1970s Miniature desk clock in 18K yellow gold, French-made, hallmarked EJ. Case: rectangular with fluted sides, concealed dial visible through a system of optical prisms, screw-down back, winding mechanism on the case back. Dial: white, with Arabic numerals and painted minute track, blued steel sword-shaped hands. Movement: mechanical, hand-wound Dial and case signed. Numbered 035274, Dimensions: 2.8 x 1.7 x 1.7 cm. Gross weight: 42.88 g Includes: original signed presentation box. The patent for the prism clock was filed in 1937 by Gaston Cusin, a watchmaker who had notably collaborated with Maurice Coüet. This ingenious system, in which the clock’s dial is reflected by two mirrors, is largely inspired by the naval periscope. Depending on the angle from which the clock is viewed, the dial appears or disappears, thereby creating an optical illusion. Condition report Very good overall condition, minor scratches from normal use Slight traces of tarnish on the case The movement was functioning at the time of the appraisal, though no guarantee is given regarding its long-term reliability. The clock has probably never been opened and has been preserved in its original state.
