Description
Attributed to Jacques Desnoues (20th century) Set of 16 gouache paintings on tracing paper on the theme of jewellery: necklaces, rings, bracelets, earrings, jewellery sets… Dimensions of the largest: approximately 32 x 25 cm What is a ‘gouaché’ in jewellery? A gouache drawing is a painting executed in gouache that depicts a piece of jewellery with precision. Before the advent of design software, these drawings were essential: they served as artistic sketches, technical references for workshops, and the basis for presentations to clients. Each gouache is a work of art in its own right, combining drawing, meticulous colouring and the play of light to best capture the three-dimensionality, the reflections of precious metals and the brilliance of the gemstones. The lot offered here comprises several gouache drawings attributed to Jacques Desnoues, a jewellery designer who collaborated with Pierre Sterlé, René Kern, and subsequently Jean and Pierre Bellin for over twenty years. Jean and Pierre Bellin, winners of seven De Beers ‘Oscars’ (Diamonds International Awards), are among the leading figures in contemporary jewellery design. These gouache sketches bear witness to the refinement and craftsmanship of haute joaillerie in the second half of the 20th century.
