Expert: Virginie JOURNIAC, CECOA, FNEPSA and CEDEA-accredited expert A work of classical conception yet executed with great spontaneity, *Mother and Child* is regarded as one of the most authentic expressions of Richard Guino’s sensibility. It encapsulates the research he undertook over nearly twenty years on the theme of motherhood and occupies a central place in his sculptural oeuvre. In the 1920s, Guino had not yet fully broken free from Renoir’s influence. This composition is clearly inspired by the sculpture he created with the master of Les Collettes, depicting Aline breastfeeding their son Pierre (1916). Unlike Renoir’s intimate portrayal of his wife and their first-born son, Guino favours here an allegorical and universal interpretation of the mother-child relationship. The first terracotta studies for this composition date back to 1911 and bear witness to a lengthy creative process, characterised by numerous variations. Guino gradually modified the figures’ positions, the child’s posture and the overall movement of the group, whilst incorporating contemporary influences, notably from Maillol. After several monumental terracotta studies and exhibitions at Hébrard from 1921 onwards, Guino envisaged a stoneware edition in collaboration with the Manufacture de Sèvres. A copy was commissioned by the Directorate of Fine Arts in 1923, and the project was revived in 1930 under the title *Mother and Child*. Despite the artistic committee’s favourable opinion, the project was abandoned due to technical difficulties with the original moulds and the high cost of restoring them. The official commission was finally cancelled in 1933. Guino, absorbed by other ceramic projects and aware of the risks inherent in firing a group of this scale, therefore postponed his project. He eventually opted for a bronze cast, produced in 1934 at his own expense by Susse. Presented at the Salon de la Société des Artistes Français and subsequently at the Galerie Bernheim-Jeune, the sculpture failed to find a buyer and remained in the artist’s garden in Antony until its sale in 1984.
