Description
A sloping desk with four curved sides. It is finished in satin-finished veneer, with inlays of rosewood and palisander on the rear panel. It opens via a flap concealing a five-drawer compartment and a double base. Two drawers form a band across the front. The piece rests on a curved base. Decorated with small bronze fittings such as finials, drop-heads and feet. Stamped on the front crossbar by Jean POPSEL. A Parisian piece from the Louis XV period. NB: The deeper top shelf projects to fit near a panelled picture rail, without a key. The piece is partly sun-faded. H. 101 – D. 46 – W. 66.5 cm. Jean Popsel (active until the Revolution): The smallest mark, This German-born cabinetmaker left his mark on the end of Louis XV’s reign and the Transition period with his intricate marquetry. He used motifs of flowers, decorative elements or trellises on chests of drawers and corner cabinets, often veneered in rosewood framed by violetwood. His Louis XVI-style pieces are generally more understated, favouring mahogany or satinwood veneers for light, clean-lined furniture.
