Description
A chest of drawers known as a ‘tomb-style’ piece from the late Regency period. It is curved on three sides and features a decoration of amaranth wood veneer laid in a curly pattern; the intermediate crossbars are fitted with brass fluting. It opens to reveal four drawers in three rows and features beautiful ornamentation in un-gilded chiselled bronze, including espagnolettes, valet-style pull handles, sphinx-adorned drawer fronts, drop-down panels, feet and a foliage-patterned apron. The top is made of red Rance marble, moulded with a corbin’s beak. A Parisian piece dating from around 1730–1740. NB: Retains its original metalwork; keys missing; some peeling and gaps in the veneer; no key; traces of a hallmark on the rear right upright, applied at a later date. H. 82.5 – D. 65.5 – W. 129.5 cm.
