Description
Regency-period walnut living room furniture. It comprises a large, fully upholstered sofa with a triple-fold mechanism, a pair of fully upholstered armchairs, and a pair of chairs with exposed wood. The sofa has winged arms, with upholstered armrests supported by sinuous consoles. The seat features a moulded, scalloped band adorned with an openwork cartouche at the front. It is supported by a curved base joined by three cross-braces, and rests on a base with angular ‘caprine’ feet. The high-backed armchairs have smooth-shanked arms supported by sinuous consoles. The scalloped moulding is adorned at the front with a beautiful apron featuring an openwork cartouche. The whole is supported by a curved base joined by a strut, and rests on an angular ‘caprines’ base. The pair of ‘à la reine’ chairs feature a moulded, scalloped backrest. This is combined with a moulded trapezoidal apron supported by a curved base with angular ‘caprinés’-style feet. A provincial piece from the first half of the 18th century. Probably from the Rhône Valley. NB: Small reversible metal reinforcements beneath the sofa’s crossbars; a rebated restoration on the chairs; one rear leg of the sofa restored due to damage to the uprights; various restorations across all the seats; and small reinforcing brackets.
