Description
A beech chair with a cane seat and a ‘à la reine’ backrest. It is scroll-cut and decorated with a cartouche featuring an inverted shell and foliage. The chair features a rattan-seated frame, pegged to a scroll-cut apron adorned with a large shell motif on three sides. It is supported by a curved base, decorated at the front with a tall tobacco leaf motif and scroll-shaped feet, surmounted by an acanthus leaf. A Parisian piece dating from around 1740–1750. NB: Restorations include a reinforcing bracket on the frame and two rear cross-bars on the seat frame. A very fine example of cabinetmaking in chair-making. H. 100 – D. 43.5 – W. 52 cm.
