Description
A set of six natural wood chairs with cane seats. The backs are scroll-cut and decorated with a cartouche and foliage scrolls. The seat features a small cane-woven frame, which is pegged to a rim carved with foliage and a large central cartouche. The set is supported by a curved base joined by an X-shaped brace. The bases of the legs are decorated with acanthus leaves and volutes. Work carried out on five 18th-century chairs dating from around 1740–1750; the sixth is a 19th-century copy. NB: Extensive restoration, grafting, reinforcement of joints, and thickened cross-braces. As is. H. 97 – D. 46 – W. 51.5 cm.
