Description
A mahogany and mahogany-veneered chest of drawers from the Louis XVI period. This rectangular piece has a base with rounded sides and a straight rear, and is decorated with fluting. The chest opens to reveal five drawers in three rows. It is adorned with torus moulding that divides the top row from the two lower rows of drawers. The chest of drawers is fitted with framed handles and ribbon-shaped bronze lock plates. Top in Belgian petit granit marble. Traces of a maker’s mark on the upper left side panel by Isaac REBOUR, and the Jurande hallmark. A Parisian piece from the Louis XVI period. NB: A small moulding is missing from the top left-hand drawer; two rear lock plates are missing; the key is missing. In good overall condition. H. 89 – D. 59.5 – W. 129 cm. Isaac Simon Rebour (born in 1735): Based in the Faubourg Saint-Antoine, Rebour was an expert in refined drawing-room furniture, notably small writing tables and ‘transforming’ or mechanical pieces. He made brilliant use of rosewood and amaranth veneers to create floral marquetry of great finesse.
