Description
Claude GALLE (1759–1815), attributed to. A pair of gilded bronze candelabra known as ‘Têtes de Génies’, each with three arms. The central shaft is topped with a flame. The shaft, with a black patina, is adorned with three gilded winged figures clad in drapery in the classical style. The circular base is decorated with interlacing patterns and small flowers. Empire period. Height: 60 cm. Claude Galle (1759–1815), admitted as a master craftsman in 1786, was a bronze artist and founder-engraver active during the late Louis XVI and Empire periods. Three pairs of this model were purchased in 1804 by the Garde Meuble for the Throne Room at the Palace of Fontainebleau. The 1810 inventory describes them as follows: ‘Gilded bronze candelabra, hexagonal, with draped figures’. Fontainebleau Palace still holds one example. This model is illustrated in the book *L’heure, le feu, la lumière. Bronzes du Garde-Meuble impérial et royal 1800–1870* by Marie-France Dupuy-Baylet, p. 82.
