Géo HAM (1900–1972). Gouache. “1903 Paris–Madrid Race – organised by the Automobile Club de France”. Signed lower right and dated 1960. 27 x 59 cm. The scene depicts the finish in Bordeaux at the ‘Quatre Pavillons’ (now Avenue Carnot) of Fernand Gabriel, declared the winner, at the wheel of his Mors Dauphin Torpille Z. Following numerous accidents, several of which were fatal, the government demanded that the race be halted in Bordeaux. A gouache dated 1960, the intended purpose of which is unknown.
