Description
A musket known as the ‘Vauban’, a flintlock and matchlock weapon. A sturdy barrel, initially octagonal then round, with a ramrod-tipped end, decorated with line-drawn scrolls and interlaced foliage. Undecorated, wavy walnut stock. The lock, which combines flintlock firing with a safety mechanism for the matchlock, is made of steel engraved with foliage and scrollwork, and signed in the centre ‘SALUS AUZARME’ (Hail to Arms!). The lock is covered by a combined cover allowing the use of either firing mechanism. It is secured by three screws and features two triggers for the respective firing mechanisms. France 17th century, the reigns of Louis XIII and Louis XIV. Good condition; the entire piece was repolished and recoloured in the 21st century, as were the blued screws. NOTE: The Army Museum holds, under reference number N/410, a luxury musket of the same design from the Armoury of Louis XIII (Lindsay, p. 86). BIOGRAPHY: The French Infantry Musket, F.
