Description
* Fred MELIANI (20th–21st centuries) Panic Attacks Black-and-white photograph mounted on Plexiglas Unsigned 100 x 100 cm (Minor surface blemish at the bottom) Limited to 5 copies, this work was featured in the 2006 exhibition “Paris sous Prozac” at the Helenbeck Gallery The Helenbeck Gallery in Paris is exhibiting the work of photographer Fred Meliani from 1 November to 16 December 2006. The artist, who divides his time between Nice and Paris, developed a project entitled “Paris sous Prozac” between January and April 2001. Following an advert published in the newspaper *Libération* in 2001, the artist photographed hundreds of strangers, asking them to act out a fictional scenario linked to the hypothetical consumption of the ‘happiness pill’. In various locations across the capital (Rue Royale, Porte de La Chapelle, Champs de Mars, etc.), the artist acts as a director of an audience-turned-cast who improvise, invent, imagine and reflect on their own stories. In scenes of personal and intimate life that take on a fantastical and strange air, the originality of the artist’s approach lies in inserting these ‘unusual’ behaviours into the urban and public space, whilst simultaneously questioning the frenzy and pressure of our societies.
