The Helenbeck sisters discovered this Turkish photographer at the Rencontres d’Arles, where he was exhibiting. They presented his work at the ‘Très chère chair’ exhibition in 2006. Halil Koyutürk’s photojournalistic work in Turkey shifts the focus from the body as a cultural medium to the visibility of sexual identity. The made-up skin and adorned yet concealed bodies of Turkey’s transvestites and transsexuals, who suffer deeply in their own bodies and face daily exclusion, overcrowding and social segregation. The artist seeks to denounce political hypocrisy, commercial exploitation and the degradation of the human body, particularly as seen in his images of street children who are abandoned, addicted to drugs and forced into prostitution.
In 2009 at the Maison des Métallos in Paris during ‘The Year of Turkey’, which featured 400 events on Turkish art in France.
