Thalia, muse of comedy.
White marble bust.
Italian work. First half of the 19th century, modelled on the ancient original.

This bust is based on the famous ancient model of Thalia, muse of Comedy, held in the Vatican Museums. The Roman sculpture, dating from the 2nd century AD, was discovered in 1774 during excavations at the villa known as the Villa of Cassius, near Tivoli, alongside a group depicting the Muses. It subsequently entered the papal collections. The model quickly became widely popular amongst Roman sculptors and workshops working for travellers on the Grand Tour.
