Our portrait draws on an iconography derived from the works of François Clouet and his circle. It bears a particular resemblance to a portrait of his brother, François II, also attributed to the circle of François Clouet and sold at Osenat on 9 November 2025, lot 64. Depictions of different sovereigns that are stylistically very similar were common at this time and bear witness to the enduring nature of the models developed by court portraitists amidst a context of rapidly changing rulers. The accidental death of Henry II during the tournament on Rue Saint-Antoine in 1559 ushered in a particularly unstable period of succession. His eldest son, Francis II, succeeded him but died in 1560, after barely more than a year on the throne. His brother Charles IX, aged just ten, then ascended the throne under the regency of his mother, Catherine de’ Medici. His reign, deeply marked by the Wars of Religion, came to a premature end in 1574. The crown then passed to Henry III, the last son of Henry II to reign and the last sovereign of the Valois dynasty. Our painting is unique in that it combines the portrait of the sovereign with a trompe-l’œil painted bas-relief, situated in the lower part of the composition.
