Tapestry from AUBUSSON (France) (late 19th century) Maximilian’s Hunt Wool and silk H_181cm W_216 cm In a sparse wood, set amidst a rolling landscape, a scene of a hound hunt unfolds. Beaters on foot and on horseback are tracking the wild boar. Under the curious gaze of a woodpecker, a jackdaw and a squirrel perched in the trees, a massive wild boar is cornered by a pack of aggressive dogs with sharp fangs, whilst a rider in sumptuous attire, mounted on a spirited steed, attempts to slay the wild beast, aided in this by a footman armed with a pike. A magnificent border featuring acanthus leaves, garlands of flowers, fruit, birds, vases, cornucopias, ribbons and sphinxes. An imperial eagle overlooks the scene. Great finesse.
