Circle of the Master of the Vase with Grotesques (17th century) Still Life with a Vase Oil on canvas. W_59 cm H_74 cm Our still life bears a resemblance to the works of a group of painters active in 17th-century Italy, whose works have been collectively referred to as those of the ‘Master of the Vase with Grotesques’. These painters are characterised by their use of vases whose design is reminiscent of those of the Renaissance, which were themselves inspired by antiquity. These vases refer to the designs of decorative painters such as Polidoro da Caravaggio and to the engravings produced by Alberto Cherubini in the late 16th century. Although these artists remain anonymous, it is possible that the painter Giacomo Recco was part of this group in his youth. Paintings attributed to the group of the Master of the Vase with Grotesques are now rare: only around thirty have survived to the present day. They bear witness to the continuing influence of models from Raphael’s school, as well as to an almost archaic character, in which the subject overrides the notion of perspective in favour of an image with bold colours, contrasting sharply with a dark, minimally rendered background.
