François GIRARDON (1628–1715), after Pluto Abducting Proserpina. Bronze group with a brown patina. France. 18th century. H_52 cm This bronze is a reduced-scale version of the famous composition designed by François Girardon for the gardens of Versailles. Commissioned as part of the ‘Grande Commande’ of 1674, the monumental marble group depicting The Abduction of Proserpine by Pluto was created between 1675 and 1699 and installed at the centre of the Colonnade Grove.
