Description
A substantial cabinet-style bookcase, inlaid with a rich ‘jasmine’ design in tulipwood, boxwood, coral, amaranth and composite fillets against an ebony background. It opens via four doors, two of which are arched and glazed at the top, and features a central drawer. The front is adorned with a vase of flowers resting on two large opposing acanthus leaves, birds and butterflies, set within friezes of flowering stems and acanthus leaves; the sides feature panels with a ‘réserves’ decoration and recessed corners. The whole piece rests on an openwork plinth edged with a frieze of godrons. Paris. 18th century. Some of the decoration dates from the Louis XIV period.
