A lacquered wooden wedding box with rich floral decoration featuring mother-of-pearl inlay and gold highlights; the domed lid is adorned with intricate lacquerwork. The front is adorned with large panels depicting birds amidst abundant flowering foliage, rendered in gold lacquer and iridescent mother-of-pearl against a dark background. The sides and lid are also decorated with flowering branches and clusters of flowers, the whole framed by geometric and plant-motif friezes. Substantial cut-metal fittings, including a central lock and movable side handles. Japan, Edo period, probably 17th century.
