Description
A set of four armchairs with a moulded, carved and lacquered walnut frame. The flat backrest features removable armrests with cuffs, supported by console-style brackets. The undulating waistband rests on curved legs. Upholstered in petit point tapestry with a design of flowering stems and foliage. Stamped L CRESSON Louis CRESSON I (1706–1761) Awarded master status in 1738 Paris. Louis XV period. H_97 cm W_65 cm D_53 cm (Restoration to the backrests and foot ends. Reinforcements to the mouldings. Minor restoration to the tapestries, with some minor imperfections). The son of the cabinetmaker Jean Cresson, he set up shop on Rue de Cléry under the sign ‘L’Image de Saint-Louis’. He went on to become the cabinetmaker to the Prince of Condé and the Duke of Orléans. He was commissioned to make a wheelchair for the grandson of Louis XV, the young Duke of Burgundy, who had become disabled. With great care, Louis Cresson crafted all manner of seats upholstered in tapestry, fabric or cane, in a Louis XV style characterised by elegant curves and equally understated carved decoration.
