Description

Martin CARLIN (c. 1730–1785), after. A rectangular writing table in blackened and lacquered wood, with rich lacquer decoration. The top features a composition of flowering branches, peonies and foliage set against a landscape. The apron, adorned with flowering branches, opens to reveal three drawers and rests on four tapered, fluted legs, embellished with gilded bronze finials and feet. The top is surrounded by a flowing gilded bronze moulding with a foliage motif. 19th-century, Louis XVI style, circa 1830, based on designs by Martin Carlin. H_74 cm W_84 cm D_48 cm Martin Carlin, who was admitted as a master cabinetmaker in Paris in 1766, is particularly renowned for his exquisite small pieces of furniture combining neoclassical lines with luxurious materials, notably Sèvres porcelain plaques and Japanese lacquer panels. A writing table from his workshop, circa 1775, now in the Louvre, combines ebony, Japanese lacquer and gilded bronze fittings (OA 10466).
