Description
LE ROY ET FILS A music box crafted from chiselled and gilded bronze, brass and twisted glass. It takes the form of a neoclassical architectural structure, surmounted by a balustrade and military trophies. The façade features a fountain set against a grotto-like backdrop, crowned with festooned garlands of flowers. It is flanked by water-spouting dolphins. The corners are adorned with Corinthian columns and pilasters, resting on bases embellished with shells. It opens via openwork panels, two of which are on the sides and pivot, whilst the rear panel is retractable. The interior is fitted with a mechanism comprising cylinders and reed pipes. The whole stands on a blackened wooden base with ball-shaped feet. Signed on the back of the base plate: Le Roy & fils Paris. Early 19th century. H_44 cm W_49.5 cm D_27 cm Fire-stamped inventory mark beneath the base: G73 (Minor losses. The mechanism has not been tested for functionality). Bazile-Charles Le Roy founded the company in 1785 and opened his first shop beneath the arcades of the Palais-Royal in Paris. Charles-Louis Le Roy joined his father’s business in 1828 and founded Leroy & Fils.
