Description

Pierre GOUTHIÈRE (1732–1813), after. A pair of chiselled and gilded bronze andirons, each adorned with two cupids seated on either side of a flaming vase. They hold garlands of flowers and fruit suspended from the central composition. The vases, with fluted pedestals, are decorated with friezes of pearls, drapery and geometric motifs. The ensemble rests on an architectural base decorated with foliage scrolls, rosettes and friezes of pearls, supported by fluted feet. 19th-century. Louis XVI style. H_44 cm W_43 cm Pierre Gouthière (1732–1813) was one of the greatest Parisian engravers and gilders of the second half of the 18th century. Having been admitted as a master gilder in 1758, he developed a technique of chiselling and gilding of exceptional finesse and worked for a prestigious clientele, notably Marie-Antoinette and the Duke of Aumont. His work played a key role in the Neoclassical revival of the decorative arts under Louis XVI.
