Description
SÈVRES. Two hard-paste porcelain fruit bowls with a curved rim, featuring a polychrome decoration centred on a garland of flowers, fruit and foliage. The rim, set against a black background imitating lacquer, is adorned with Chinese motifs on three tiers, featuring pagodas in two-tone gold and platinum. Gold fillets. Marked on the reverse in red: ‘Sèvres X’ for Year X (23 September 1801–22 September 1802). Incised marks, including ‘DC’ on one, for Descoins Charles, a turner active from 1776–1778 and 1780–1821. Early 19th century. D_22cm (Wear to the gold). These two fruit bowls most likely come from the service described as ‘black Chinese ground in gold’, purchased on 29 Germinal Year 10 (19 April 1802) by General Gabriel Marie-Joseph, Count of Hédouville (1755–1825), Minister Plenipotentiary and French Ambassador to Russia in Saint Petersburg from 1801 to 1804. Other services featuring this same design, described in the Sèvres Manufactory’s sales registers as “Chinese black ground with coloured gold and platinum, enamelled flowers”, were delivered: - the first set was sold on 6 May 1791 to the Marquis Charles-Louis Huguet de Sémonville (1759–1839), Louis XVI’s ambassador to Genoa. - a service delivered on 4 April 1792 to James Milmes, an English textile merchant and later a Member of Parliament, - a service purchased at the end of 1794 by Citizen Pierre-Fédécie Empaytaz, director of the trading house Empetaz et Compagnie and commercial agent in France for the King of Prussia (David Peters, op. cit., 2005, Vol. IV, 92–4, pp. 947–949 and Vol. V, 94–11, pp. 1053–55).
