Description
Giuseppe Maria BONZANIGO (1745–1820), attributed to
A pair of armchairs with high backs featuring finely carved and gilded medallions. The oval backrest, emphasised by mouldings, is crowned and adorned with carved foliage and fleurons. The sweeping armrests, finished with large scrolls, rest on consoles carved with acanthus leaves. The rounded waistband is decorated with foliage motifs and fleurons. The whole piece stands on four tapered, fluted and serrated legs, topped with carved cubes.

Giuseppe Maria Bonzanigo, who was based in Turin from 1773, was one of the leading woodcarvers and furniture designers at the Court of Savoy. He worked notably for the Royal Palace of Turin, Moncalieri and Stupinigi, before being appointed in 1787 as ‘scultore in legno’ to Victor Amadeus III, King of Sardinia.
