Description
A half-moon-shaped chest of drawers with a framed design, crafted from oak wood inlaid with strip rosewood veneer, amaranth and boxwood strips. It opens to reveal two drawers with recessed crossbars and two side panels revealing shelves. The upright sides are embellished with faux fluting and rest on sheathed legs with reserved decoration. Chiselled and gilded bronze fittings: lock plates, pull rings on medallions, apron, drop pieces, triglyphs and inlaid feet. Moulded Sarrancolin marble top. Stamped: A. HERICOURT and guild mark JME (on the top edge of the left-hand rear upright) Antoine HERICOURT (c. 1730–1792). Admitted to the guild in 1773. Paris. Louis XVI period. After working as a freelance craftsman in the Faubourg Saint-Antoine, Antoine Héricourt set up his workshop on Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré and became a deputy for his guild, then its syndic the following year. His extensive body of work, highly prized by both French and foreign clients, consists of finely crafted furniture, chiefly Transition-style chests with projecting fronts, and Louis XVI chests, often half-moon in shape, made of veneered wood and mahogany of the highest quality and fitted with finely chiselled bronze fittings. He also produced a few pieces finished in lacquer or varnish in the Chinese style.
