Description
A chest of drawers with a stepped front and a framed decoration in wood and mahogany veneer. It features five drawers, three of which are set within a panel emphasised by a half-bead moulding, and two with a recessed crossbar. The side panels, featuring embedded columns with serrated fluting, rest on tapered legs. Chiselled and gilded bronze fittings: fillet mouldings, drop rings on medallions, rings and octagonal shoes set into the wood. Top in grey Saint-Anne marble with a recessed centre. Stamped: GASPAR.SCHNEIDER and JME hallmark (on both front side panels). Gaspard Schneider. Certified as a master craftsman in 1786. Paris. Louis XVI period. H_91 cm W_114 cm D_50.5 cm (Slight cracks on the sides. Missing mouldings from the frame and a lock opening). Gaspard Schneider A native of Augsburg, he was a talented cabinetmaker who settled in Paris, where he initially worked as a journeyman on Rue du Faubourg Saint-Antoine. Upon the death of Martin Carlin, he married his widow and took over his workshop. A few weeks later, on 15 March 1786, he was admitted as a master craftsman and worked mainly for haberdashers, in particular for Darnault, to whom he supplied furniture for the Queen. He continued to make and finish furniture bearing Carlin’s signature and Schneider’s stamp, such as the superb writing desk from the Patiño collection, sold by Sotheby’s in New York on 20 May 1992 (lot 70). Ruined by the Revolution, he was forced to close his workshop but resumed his work at the start of the Empire. His rare output is always of the very highest quality.
