Adam WEISWEILER (1744–1820), in the style of. A very fine neoclassical-style pedestal table in chiselled, gilded and patinated bronze and veined white marble. The top, framed by a gallery with an interlaced frieze, rests on an openwork band decorated with latticework and rosettes. It is supported by a central baluster and three upright sections featuring triple columns imitating bamboo, joined by a crossbar. The whole rests on spiral legs. Paris. Attributed to Maison Jansen. The firm enjoyed considerable renown and had highly prestigious international patrons. It was to leave a profound mark on and influence the history of the decorative arts. The second half of the 19th century in France is described as the ‘eclecticism’ era in terms of the decorative arts. It was against this backdrop that Maison Jansen was founded in 1880. At the same time, it also created more contemporary pieces, which combined ‘historicist’ forms whilst taking into account the various fashions that emerged from the late 19th century onwards, such as the Turkish style and Japonism. Nor did she hesitate to collaborate with independent contemporary craftsmen, such as the cabinetmaker François Linke, Joseph Emmanuel Zwiener and Jean-Michel Frank, to create unique pieces for special commissions or specific exhibitions.
