Description
A substantial, tiered, double-bodied desk in the Neoclassical style, crafted from wood and walnut veneer, with chiselled and gilded bronze oak. The three-part upper section, crowned by an openwork gallery, features four drawers, five compartments, three shelves and four slatted doors concealing twelve compartments and two side compartments. The central section opens to reveal nine drawers, a sliding pull-out and an inclined surface divided into three sections, each lined with green leather embossed with a fine Greek fret pattern. These reveal a writing desk, six drawers and two secret side compartments. The whole piece rests on two base units which open at the front via two doors and four drawers, including two narrow drawers in the plinth and two side doors. Chiselled and gilded bronze fittings: lock plates with a row of pearls, rings descending onto rosette-shaped medallions, pull knobs, and sunflower motifs. Northern Europe. Probably Sweden.
