Description
A rare paperweight comprising a bouquet of fruit and foliage carved from polychrome semi-precious stones, including bunches of grapes, raspberries and other fruits, arranged on a rectangular, bevelled tray of dark jasper.
Russia, Yekaterinburg, third quarter of the 19th century.
Attributed to the Imperial Stone-Cutting Workshops of Yekaterinburg.

The Yekaterinburg stone-carving workshops were among Russia’s leading centres for hardstone carving, benefiting directly from the mineral wealth of the Urals. The workshops produced both monumental works and precious cabinet pieces showcasing jasper, rhodonite, nephrite, agate, quartz and carnelian.
Trompe-l’œil fruit compositions were particularly sought-after in the 19th century. A paperweight held at the Fersman Mineralogical Museum, from the Stroganov collection, features a similar combination of fruit, leaves and stones from the Urals.
Yekaterinburg’s gem-cutting works were commonly used as imperial diplomatic gifts.
