Rondanini Medusa. An important carved white marble mask. It rests on an architecturally designed marble plinth. Dated to the early 20th century, modelled on an ancient original. H_77 cm The Rondanini Medusa, now housed in the Glyptothek in Munich, is one of the most famous depictions of the Gorgon in 5th-century BC Greek art. The ancient prototype has sometimes been linked to the shield of Phidias’s Athena Parthenos, although this connection cannot be regarded as certain. This model enjoyed great popularity in European sculpture, particularly following the rediscovery of antiquity in the 18th and 19th centuries.
