Paul Emile Antony MORLON, known as Antoine MORLON (1834–1913) The Foreigner in Paris & The Foreigner’s Guide, 1862 Pair of oil paintings on canvas. One signed and dated ‘62’ in the bottom left-hand corner, the other signed in the bottom right-hand corner. H_47 cm W_36.5 cm (Very slight restoration). These two compositions, conceived as a pair, were popularised thanks to a lithographic print from 1862 produced by Antoine Morlon with the assistance of Claude Régnier and Joseph Bettannier. The expressiveness of the man’s face is reminiscent of the work of the portraitist Joseph Ducreux. Antoine Morlon is known for his seascapes as well as his genre scenes depicting 19th-century Parisian life. He exhibited at the Salon and the World’s Fair, and won several medals.
