Description
TEHRAN (Persian) carpet, woven circa 1870–80.
Wool pile on a cotton ground.
A magnificent, multi-lobed, ivory-coloured cruciform medallion, adorned with star motifs and floral scrolls featuring cherry-coloured leaves and a celadon-green centre, takes pride of place at the centre of a turquoise field featuring intricate, intertwining polychrome scrolls and volutes.
Numerous birds have found refuge in this Garden of Eden. The two upper cherry-coloured spandrels, featuring arrow-shaped arabesques, are home to two immaculate doves holding a flowering branch in their beaks, whilst the lower spandrels are two-coloured and adorned with floral compositions.
A wide ivory border featuring a garland of flowers in undulating spirals and zoomorphic creatures. Four counter-borders complete the frame: one in old gold, two in cherry red and another in turquoise, all four featuring garlands of small flowers. Extremely imposing and with sublime design. Rare.
