Jean-Louis GRÉGOIRE (1840–1890), after
A large pair of six-light candelabra, in chiselled bronze, gilded and patinated. They depict a draped, crowned woman holding a bouquet of lilies, carnations and other flowers. She rests on a circular platform adorned with a dolphin, a shell, reeds and rushes. The whole is supported by a moulded black marble plinth with small curved feet. Signed: L. GREGOIRE on the base.

Jean-Louis Grégoire (1840–1890), the son of a metal engraver, was born in Paris on 15 December 1840. He was trained by the famous sculptor Jean Jules Salmson at the École des Beaux-Arts, and his works were first exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1867. Grégoire is known for his mythological and allegorical sculptures, often of a classical nature and featuring themes of war and music, typical of the academic style in which he was trained. Several of his works were cast in bronze by the renowned Susse Frères foundry. Grégoire died in France in 1890.
