Jean-Louis GRÉGOIRE (1840–1890), after A substantial bronze group with a brown patina, depicting a woman draped in the classical style and two cherubs, resting on a circular base of fluted red griotte marble and surrounded by a frieze of laurel leaves. Signed: L. GREGOIRE and bearing the foundry mark of Boyer frères in Paris. Paris. Date: second half of the 19th century. H_75 cm Jean-Louis Grégoire (1840–1890), the son of a metal engraver, was born in Paris on 15 December 1840. He was trained by the renowned sculptor Jean Jules Salmson at the École des Beaux-Arts, and his works were first exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1867. Grégoire is known for his mythological and allegorical sculptures, often of a classical nature and featuring themes of war and music, typical of the academic style in which he was trained. Several of his works were cast in bronze by the renowned Susse Frères foundry. The Boyer Frères foundry (later known as Boyer et Rolland) was a major French art and ornamental foundry operating in Paris during the 19th century. It made a name for itself in the production of art bronzes based on models by renowned sculptors, as well as in the manufacture of high-quality mantelpieces.
