Émile PICAULT (1830–1922), after A fine bronze cast with a brown patina, depicting a ‘14th-century scholar’ – a medieval student of law and theology – on a circular plinth. Signed: E. PICAULT (on the plinth). Inscription in a brass cartouche: ESCHOLIER Paris. Second half of the 19th century H_64 cm (The lantern is missing). The work embodies the artist’s quest to capture the intellectual and spiritual essence of his era. It bears witness to a deep commitment to humanist values and education. In this sculpture, he depicts a young ‘Escholier’, dressed in the traditional academic gown of his time, with a sword and an inkwell fastened to his belt. Under his right arm, he holds a book titled ‘BIBLIA’, whilst his index finger holds a lantern. His pensive gaze is directed towards a promising future, thus symbolising a thirst for knowledge and a yearning for wisdom.
