Description
A pair of side tables in patinated and gilded bronze, each featuring two stacked circular tops with engraved decoration depicting landscapes, figures and vegetation. The three slender legs are modelled to resemble bamboo stalks, marked with their characteristic nodes, and joined to the tops by bronze fittings. They are finished with small, naturalistic feet. French work from the late 19th century, circa 1880–1900. Attributed to Perret & Vibert, Maison des Bambous. H_85 cm D_37 cm Founded in Paris in 1872 by Alfred Perret, the Maison des Bambous was taken over by Perret’s son and Ernest Vibert from 1886 onwards. Initially specialising in bamboo and rattan furniture inspired by the Far East, the firm went on to produce a significant range of Japanese-style furniture and also sold Japanese bronzes, porcelain, lacquerware and objets d’art. Its creations enjoyed great success in the late 19th century and featured in the homes of a prestigious clientele, including, notably, Empress Eugénie and Princess Mathilde.
