Description
An exceptional wedding casket in the Neo-Gothic style, crafted from mild steel and decorated with arcades, mouldings and friezes featuring stylised animals and plants. It opens via a rounded lid with a handle in the shape of a helmeted bust; the underside is lined with blue silk in a tufted pattern. The front forms a portico adorned with three figures surmounted by pinnacles, including a woman with her hands clasped and a man with a sword. The retractable central section reveals a keyhole. It is surrounded by friezes, four spandrel busts, and flanked by two pilasters adorned with saints. The sides, fitted with drop handles, and the back are decorated in a similar style. The corners feature freestanding composite columns, adorned with capitals, rings and acanthus leaves. France. Late 19th century. H_ 35 cm W_33.5 cm D_24.5 cm (Traces of oxidation).
