André Gill (1840–1885) – Caricature of Sophie Croizette. 1878. Drawing in Indian ink on paper. Signed top right. 27.7 × 20.5 cm. This drawing is a preparatory sketch for the cover illustration of the newspaper ‘Les hommes d’aujourd’hui’ dated 27 December 1878. It depicts the famous actress of the Comédie Française, Sarah Bernhardt’s great rival, here made up as a sphinx to echo the title of the play and the role that had brought her great fame.
