Louis Etienne Watelet (1780–1866) – View of Menton. Early 19th century. Pencil drawing and ink wash on paper. 15.2 × 17.8 cm. Mounted directly onto heavy paper. An ink inscription on the mat reads: ‘View of the town of Menton taken from the Palais Carnolès, the Prince of Monaco’s country residence. ’ This view depicts this town in the Alpes-Maritimes region at a time when it was not yet a popular tourist destination on the Côte d’Azur.
