Description
Joseph Victor Roux Champion (1871–1953) – Place Saint-Michel in Paris. Circa 1904. Original drawing in pencil, watercolour and gouache on paper. Signed in pencil lower left, dated and annotated on the reverse. 25x32.5cm. Here is a view of a Paris that hardly exists anymore. Whilst the spire of the Sainte-Chapelle can be made out, what lies in front of it has been replaced by the extension to the Court of Justice, completed in 1914. Adjacent to this curious building, which was an iconic landmark of working-class Paris, stood the surgery of Sabra, a famous ‘dentist’ but above all a tooth puller.
