Giuseppe Signorini (1857–1932) – The Ottoman Soldier Guarding Prisoners. 1886. Pencil, watercolour and gouache on heavy paper. Signed, dated and located in Paris in the lower right-hand corner. 57 x 40 cm. The artist depicts a soldier from the East, likely from the Ottoman Empire, as evidenced by his helmet and round shield. Perhaps more specifically, a soldier from Persia in what is now Syria, Iraq or Iran. Signorini was an artist originally from Italy, who had studios in Paris and Rome. His predominant style was Orientalism, and more specifically Islamic figures.
