SAINT-LOUIS. A substantial Saint-Louis crystal service, ‘Thistle’ model, comprising 65 pieces including 12 champagne flutes, 11 water glasses, 11 wine glasses, 11 port glasses, 8 orangeade glasses, 4 whisky glasses, 2 small bowls, 8 handled cups, one large shallow bowl, 2 salt cellars, one ewer, one water jug, one liqueur carafe, two champagne buckets (one damaged). Stamped. 20th century. Shows signs of wear and tear. The thistle, emblem of the city of Nancy, inspired the first tableware set in 1908. In 1913, the name was anglicised to ‘Thistle’ and has graced the finest dining tables ever since. Fine Venetian ribs, bevelled edges and a frieze of 24-carat gold or platinum adorn the glass body.
