Studio of Michel-Marie Carquillat (1802–1884) – 19th-century Lyon School Portrait of the British Royal Family, after WINTERHALTER, Lyon, 1851 Woven on silk by Michel-Marie Carquillat, a master weaver from Lyon, produced by Potton, Rambaud and Company Dimensions including margins: 102 x 77 cm Michel-Marie Carquillat was one of the most remarkable figures in the Lyon textile industry during the 19th century. Yet he remains relatively unknown today, despite having been a veritable celebrity in his day. His workshop in the Croix-Rousse was a must-visit destination for sovereigns, princes and foreign travellers who came to discover the wonders of the Jacquard loom.
