Description
Georges Braque (1882-1963) - Freedom of the seas. By Pierre Reverdy, G. Braque and recent illustrated books, 1960-1961. Galerie Maeght, Paris. Printer Maeght, Paris. 63x43cm. Original poster, lithograph. Not backed. Condition A. Perfect condition. Produced for the exhibition held at the Galerie Maeght from December 1960 to January 1961, this poster accompanied the publication of the artist's book La liberté des mers, the fruit of the collaboration between Georges Braque and Pierre Reverdy. A founding figure of Cubism alongside Pablo Picasso, Braque was one of the major artists of the twentieth century, whose work profoundly transformed the concept of pictorial space and had a lasting influence on modern art. Elected to the Académie des Beaux-Arts and the first living painter to be exhibited at the Louvre in 1961, he occupies an exceptional place in the history of art. Pierre Reverdy, an essential poet of the avant-garde, close to Cubist and Surrealist circles, is recognised for his decisive influence on modern poetry and for his links with many of the major artists of his time. This collaboration between two leading figures illustrates the fruitful dialogue between poetry and painting in the post-war period. Edited and printed by Maeght, a major player in the artist's book and print market, this poster is a first-rate example of prestige art publishing in the 20th century.
