Produced for the Salon de l'Alsatique in Marlenheim, this poster illustrates the graphic universe of Tomi Ungerer, a major Alsatian artist of the 20th century, internationally renowned for his incisive drawings, his often satirical humour and his commitment to challenging social and political hypocrisies. The author of an extremely diverse body of work (children's illustrations, posters, satirical drawings), Ungerer occupies a unique position between graphic art, illustration and social criticism. His posters for cultural events in Alsace testify to his attachment to his native region and his ability to produce images that are immediately legible and highly expressive. The author of "Les Trois Brigands" (The Three Brigands), who has devoted much of his career to illustration for young people, while developing a highly committed satirical and political body of work. Born in Strasbourg in 1931, Ungerer became one of the most internationally acclaimed illustrators in the 1960s after moving to New York, where his children's books met with considerable success. His instantly recognisable style is characterised by nervous, expressive drawing, often tinged with black humour. The artist excelled at reinterpreting traditional tales, giving them a new visual dimension, combining fantasy, irony and a certain irreverence. The Ungerer Museum is in Strasbourg, his birthplace.
