Description
Théophile Alexandre Steinlen (1859-1923) d'après - Steinlen, Musée de Montmartre, 1977. Printed by Arte, Paris. 65x48 cm. Original poster, lithographic print. Not canvas-backed. Condition A. Perfect condition. Produced for an exhibition devoted to Théophile Alexandre Steinlen at the Musée de Montmartre in 1977, this poster is part of the rediscovery of the great poster artists of the late 19th century, the founding period of modern poster art in Paris. Steinlen, a major figure on the Montmartre art scene and a close associate of the Chat Noir cabaret, was renowned for his powerful compositions combining social observation, popular scenes and animals, particularly the cats that became emblematic of his work. The 1977 exhibition highlights his central role in the golden age of the illustrated poster and in the aesthetics of the Belle Époque. The printing by Arte Paris is in keeping with the tradition of prestigious reprints and exhibition posters of the 1970s.
