Produced for a 1981 exhibition of Simon Hantaï's Peintures nouvelles in Gordes, this poster accompanies one of the major artists of post-war painting, associated with the deconstruction of the pictorial gesture and the folding techniques ("pliage/dépliage") that structure much of his work. Hantaï played a central role in the revival of painting in France from the 1960s onwards, in dialogue with lyrical abstraction and research into the materiality of the pictorial surface. The Gordes exhibition bears witness to the institutional recognition of his work in the 1980s.
